I felt scared and trapped - till I texted with Empower Work

Folks who reach out to Empower Work often mention that it helps to hear stories from others who are going through similar work challenges. Em*, who used Empower Work this year, offered to share her experience. To protect confidentiality, we’re sharing her story with a pseudonym.

What inspired you to reach out to Empower Work?

I had a terrible encounter with my boss that left me scared and feeling trapped. I couldn't quit, I have no means of communication within the company that wouldn't make situation worse. I found Empower Work through Google and loved that I could talk to someone immediately about my situation and what I should do.

What did you like most about connecting with Empower Work?

I got more out of a single chat on Empower Work than I did from months of therapy. Their questions helped me pause my emotions and really think about why I was feeling the way I did. They also helped walk me through my thoughts about current and potential new work, making me feel less trapped by the end.

Why do you think support like Empower Work’s is important?

Everyone needs someone they can talk to in a moment. Someone that is not affected by any actions you consider, that has heard what you are going through from others and can attest that you aren't crazy or wrong for feeling the way you do.

How did you feel afterwards? What, if any, actions did you take?

I had a heart to heart with the two people making me feel trapped in my current situation. I applied the same night of my chat to many jobs that fit my needs, in the hopes that I can leave my job soon. Most importantly, I did both of these actions guilt-free, instead focused on taking responsibility and control over my life's direction.

What would you tell someone about using Empower Work?

Do not hesitate for one moment about talking to them, about anything. Let the conversation go where it leads, listen to their questions. You can learn a lot about yourself by talking to someone who knows their stuff the way these volunteers do!
